Volunteer Walk Leader

Do you have
a passion for the outdoor life and enjoy walking? Stockton Borough Council are looking for a
cohort of volunteers to lead on health walks to showcase what amazing
countryside and greenspaces we have around the Borough of Stockton. This is a
great way to connect people with nature and be more active outdoors.

The role would include organising a health walk in Countryside and parks of your choice such as:

Preston Park/Ropner Park/Wynyard Woodland Park/ Coatham Woodland Park/Stillington Park and many more……………

Countryside and Greenspace 


As a walk leader, you will be responsible for a combination of the
following tasks:

Checking a route and familiarising yourself with it before
leading the walk

Welcoming walkers to the walks, particularly new walkers

Giving a brief talk before the walk to make sure
everyone is prepared

Making sure paperwork like registration forms and
registers are completed

Leading and managing walks (usually having a volunteer
assistant at the back dependant on the size and ability of the group)

Making sure walks are welcoming, friendly, enjoyable
and safe

Trouble-shooting and dealing with problems on walks,
with the support of your volunteer and engagement officer

· Providing
information about other walks offered within Stockton and basic information
about how to keep active

Knowledge & Skills

No experience is required as full training will be given. Once you have completed the one day course full support will also be given to help set you up with your first led walk. 

Personal Qualities

The main skill we need from our volunteer walk leaders is enthusiasm for walking and all its benefits! In addition, we love our leaders to be:

  • Friendly, welcoming with good communication skills
  • Observant, sensitive and supportive
  • Knowledgeable about the basics of the benefits of walking and physical activity
  • Reliable, punctual, honest and well-organised
  • Able to work independently but with guidance and support
  • Confident at speaking in front of small groups
  • Able to take control and be assertive when needed

General Requirements

You will need to commit to a one day credited course which is completely free of charge. The course will take place on Wednesday 27th October 2021. As a volunteer walk
leader, you’ll be helping people in your community to get active and healthy
and ensuring walks are friendly, safe and well run. Walk leaders are also our
ambassadors for walking, showing people that walking really can make a big
difference to their lives.

If you can commit to either weekly or fortnightly walks, whatever is convenient for you and agreed with the volunteer and engagement officer.
