Purpose
of Role

To offer
Thirteen Service Users (over the age of 18) counselling support and regular
counselling sessions to aid with difficult transitions and complex emotions.

Responsibilities



Main Tasks and Expectations


·
To
follow the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and
Psychotherapy


·
Explain the therapy/therapies offered toService Users and staff as needed and professionally representing these therapies within
Thirteen


·
Plan an appropriate counselling schedule for eachService User, taking into consideration their aims, individual needs and
preferences, comfort and safety considerations


·
To see Service
Users on a regular basis unless otherwise agreed with your line manageror clinical supervisor



  • Book
    appointments and liaise with staff for room access, etc


·
Agree
a counselling contract between the counsellor and the client


·
To
offer therapeutic sessions to no longer than 60 minutes



  • Provide up to 8 counselling sessions to
    individuals with the option to extend with agreement of client and
    manager

  • Ensure theService User
    is as comfortable as possible before beginning sessions


·
Ensure
the safety of self and Service Users within the counselling setting


·
Identify
any Service Users that may require referral to other specialist services


·
Ensure
that all Service Users are treated with dignity and respect


·
To
maintain appropriate records in line with Thirteen’s policies, procedures and
confidentiality agreement requirements


·
DocumentService User contact notes
including details of outcomes or concerns


·
Feedback relevant information fromService Users to a staff member


·
Participate in on-going reflective practice


·
Provide
any statistical information as may be required


·
Attend suitable one-to-one clinical supervision at your own cost and
in line with your course and/or personal requirements


·
To
maintain BACP (or other appropriate professional body) membership throughout
the term of the placement


·
To
have in place appropriate insurance


·
Take responsibility for continuing professional and personal
development


Volunteers will also need;


·
To be punctual and attend arranged voluntary sessions
and let the team know if this is not possible at the earliest opportunity


·
To follow the organisations confidentiality and risk
management procedures and to maintain safe working practices including
traceability


·
To familiarise yourself with relevant policies and
procedures including Lone Working and Health and Safety


·
To treat any equipment given to you from the
organisation with care and respect


·
To behave in a professional manner that reflects
Thirteen’s values


·
To attend regular supervisions and where appropriate
team meetings to input and receive feedback.





Knowledge & Skills

Skills/Experience
Needed



·
Trained
to a Level 3 in Counselling Skills (or similar) (certificate to be evidenced)



·
Completion
of first year Diploma or Degree in Counselling



·
Has
a broad range of knowledge regarding psychological therapies



·
Is
a member of BACP, BPS, UKCP or other appropriate professional body (membership
to be evidenced)



·
A
good knowledge of and commitment to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good
Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy



·
Be
motivated with a positive attitude



·
Good
Communication Skills to work in a positive way with Service Users



·
Trustworthy
and reliable




  • Empathy to listen to the needs ofService Users

  • Excellent record keeping



·
Awareness and acknowledgment of any limitations in ability and
experience




  • The ability to formulate responsible relationships/boundaries withService
    Users

General Requirements




Availability and Duration


To
aid in consistency we would like volunteers to volunteer regularly and in a consistent manner so that Service
Users can start and complete any scheduled therapy plans/sessions. This role
requires a minimum expectation of 6 months offering daytime support only.







Training and Induction Requirements


Volunteer counsellors will undergo an
Enhanced DBS check and will need two references. Training sessions will also
have to be attended before starting the placement and include; an online
E-learning package plus two days training with the Volunteer and Peer Mentor
Coordinator. Volunteers will be expected to attend any further training as
required.
