Summer Reading Challenge Volunteer (16 – 24 years)

Description


To assist in the roll out of the Summer Reading Challenge across Stockton Borough Libraries.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to:

  • Interact with staff, young library users and other volunteers.
  • Provide a valuable service for the children of Stockton on Tees.
  • A chance to give time to your local community
  • An opportunity to work with children and young people.
  • Something to put on your CV.
  • Recognition from Stockton Borough Libraries for your achievements and the important role that you play in supporting this service.
  • We promise to organise social events during the year to encourage friendships between volunteers.
  • Support from the Volunteer and Engagement Officer.
  • Improve your health and wellbeing by giving something back, instilling a sense of achievement.
  • To feel a part of something, to belong to a team.

 

Libraries & Information

  • Attend a training workshop provided by the Children and Young Persons Librarian.
  • To register children on to the Summer Reading Challenge.
  • Discuss books that the children have read and offer recommendations for their next selection.
  • Mark off when children have read their book and issue incentives accordingly.
  • Assist library staff with summer holiday craft sessions and story times.
  • Keep accurate records as required by Stockton Borough Council.
  • Listen to children, value their experience, and help them to feel confident in using their library.
  • Actively promote the service, using your own personal skills and knowledge of reading.
  • Adhering to Council’s Health & Safety policies

Onsite training will be provided within the library and at a training workshop prior to the start date. Volunteers will never be alone in the library and will work in pairs. The potential volunteer will be accompanied at all times whilst on site and wear an ID badge

  • Friendly personality
  • Ability to communicate effectively with children and young people.
  • Ability to work with others and to follow instructions.
  • Ability to act in accordance with health and safety procedures

 

Must be passionate about reading and children’s literacy. Have a friendly approach and be adaptable to suit the needs of the child.

Aged between 16-24 years

You will be allocated to one of our nine libraries across Stockton -on-Tees: Stockton Central Library, Billingham Library, Norton Library, Fairfield Library, Roseworth Library, Thornaby Central Library, Thornaby Library Gilmour Street, Ingleby Barwick Library, Yarm Library

Flexible days but a commitment of 10 hours over the summer holidays. 10am-12pm mornings and 2pm-4pm afternoons.
