- Family Action Perinatal Support Service
We provide emotional support to families where a parent is struggling with their emotional health or well-being during pregnancy and the first 2 years after birth. The Perinatal Support Service is for parents who have, or are at significant risk of developing, mild to moderate mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.
Knowledge & Skills
Perhaps
you are someone who has either;
·
experienced pregnancy and childbirth, and is able to
empathise with the needs of families during the perinatal period
Or;
·
has an understanding of emotional distress, the
emotional effects of pregnancy and birth and the demands of parenthood, and who
is able to empathise with the needs of families during the perinatal period. We
recognise and value the experience of all parents.
Personal Qualities
This role would suit someone who can offer a listening ear. Perinatal support service volunteers might help build someone’s confidence by going for a walk with them and their baby or maybe accompanying them to a group for the first time.
You will be supported by the Perinatal Team.
General Requirements
We will ask you to commit
to volunteering for a 6 month period, following your training and induction. We
will ask you to commit to meeting with your family once a week or fortnight, depending
on their individual needs. You will need to commit about 3 hours per week for
this role.
All volunteers complete
an Enhanced DBS check and will need to provide two references. There are
specific core training modules that we will ask you to complete as part of your
induction. Once you have joined the team, we will ask you to attend regular
team meetings to help us support you and keep in touch.
We will ask volunteers to
uphold certain standards such as being reliable, working in a confidential way,
remain professional, keep records of your work and work in a way that reflects
the Perinatal Peer Support principles.
We are looking for people
who embody our Family Action Value’s of being people focused, striving for
excellence, showing a ‘can do’ attitude and showing mutual respect.
If
you have lived experience in relation to perinatal support, we will support you
to consider whether volunteering for the service is right for you at this time.
