Scout Volunteer – Inspire Independence & Adventure in Hardwick & Roseworth!

Description

Want to help young people step out of their comfort zones, build true independence, and discover what they’re really capable of?

Our Scout Troops (for young people aged 10½–14) are where the real adventure kicks into high gear. We are looking for practical, enthusiastic adult volunteers to help our Scouts master skills for life. This is the age where they learn to pitch their own tents, cook their own meals on lightweight stoves, navigate wild trails, and tackle activities like kayaking, climbing, and night hiking.

You don’t need to be an extreme athlete or a survival expert to make a huge impact. We are 100% committed to flexible volunteering. If a weekly commitment doesn’t fit your life, you can share the role with a friend, help out on a flexible rota around your shift patterns, or act as our “outdoor specialist” who just comes along on the weekend campouts and hikes. We build the role around you.

  • Work with a supportive team of volunteers to plan and deliver an action-packed indoor and outdoor programme.

  • Guide Scouts as they take on bigger outdoor challenges, learn teamwork, and work towards their Gold Chief Scout’s Award.

  • Encourage the “Patrol” system, helping older Scouts step up into leadership roles and mentor their younger peers.

  • Oversee safe, inclusive sessions where young people are given the space to make mistakes, learn from them, and build resilience.

  • No prior Scouting or outdoor survival experience is required—full, free training is provided!

  • Good communication skills and the ability to connect with and guide young teenagers.

  • Any practical skills or hobbies you can share—from DIY and mechanics to digital skills, map-reading, or sports—are a massive bonus.

  • A willingness to get stuck into outdoor activities and camps.

  • Positive, encouraging, and a good listener.

  • Fair, reliable, and able to command respect while maintaining a great sense of fun.

  • Resilient and practical, with a “can-do” attitude that inspires the young people around you.

  • Must be 18 or older (though we can accommodate volunteers aged 14-18 through our young leaders scheme).

  • An enhanced DBS check is required for this role (completed free of charge through us).
