The Scouts is one of the largest youth movements in the world with over 50 million members worldwide and nearly 600 of those are here in Stockton and the surrounding areas supported by over 200 adult volunteers. As we strive to be able to offer the opportunity for more young people than ever before to be able to take part in the adventure of Scouts we are seeking to strengthen our trustee board and the increase the range of skills among the team.
Our trustee board is a team of volunteers who work together, as trustees of the charity, to make sure that our District is run safely and legally. The board focuses on strategy, performance and assurance ensuring that we manage our finances well, follow relevant policies and legislation, look after buildings and property, have appropriate insurance, manage risk and ensure that the charity is able to operate today and into the future.

What’s the time commitment?

  • All new trustees will be required to complete some initial training, this is in the form of e-learning so can be completed at any time to suit the individual, some of this is modules common to all adults in Scouts, other areas are specific to trustees.
  • Trustee board meetings are held on a weekday evening once every other month and normally last for around one to one and half hours.
  • Aside from meetings, Trustees are expected to read and consider relevant documentation provided to them and from time to time to work on small projects and written contributions however this can often be completed at a time to suit each individual.
  • It is anticipated that the renewed trustee board is likely to meet in person a few times a year for a longer period to discuss matters in greater depth and work together in smaller groups– though the exact nature of this will be determined by the new trustee board.

All trustees will also be issued with an @stocktonthornabydistrictscouts.com email address and access to the District’s Google Drive for conducting trustee business

Work alongside the Lead Volunteer, Chair, Treasurer and other trustees to:

  • Ensure that budgets are in place and that these are managed effectively
  • Ensure that the rules and policies of the Scouts (POR) and the charity commission are followed
  • Create the trustees annual report and statement of accounts
  • Hold an AGM
  • Ensure that adequate and relevant insurance policies are in
  • place
  • Ensure that buildings and equipment are working well
  • Maintain a risk register and ensure that mitigations are put in place
  • Work with the lead volunteer to ensure that the charity meets it’s aims

We’re looking for people with professional or voluntary experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • People and business
  • Finance
  • Health & Safety and/or risk management
  • Compliance
  • Facilities or premises management
  • Bid writing
  • Marketing
  • Community relations – particularly with IMD 1-3 and ethnic minority communities
  • Volunteering (i.e. working with volunteers or another voluntary organisation)
  • Scouts – this could be as a young person, as a current or former adult volunteer or as a parent

Whilst this role is open to all, we are particularly keen to hear from those applicants aged 18-25 or from minority backgrounds to help ensure that our board is representative of the area we serve and the young people in our care
