Stockton Befriending
service aims to provide company and friendship to people living alone, aged
over 65 and who are the most lonely and isolated people in the area.

Befriending can
include company and conversation at an older persons home, help with small
daily living tasks, a visit to a local venue or short walk and/or introduction
to community groups/activities.

The service is
delivered by Age UK Teesside and supported by BHBW Stockton Council.


Communities and Outreach


To provide
befriending to older people in the community and visit clients in their own

To build a
relationship with the client to reduce their loneliness and/or isolation

Attend community
activities/groups with the client (if appropriate)

To any report
concerns to line manager and

To observe Age UK
Teesside policies and procedures and provide information for monitoring

To undertake
suitable training to assist in your role as a befriender

Knowledge & Skills

Volunteers should
be reliable, non-judgemental and have good communication skills. Knowledge of issues affecting the client
group and previous volunteering experience is desirable, but not essential. The ability to build good rapport and be
respectful is essential.

This role
requires you to be able to work alone and unsupervised.

General Requirements

A minimum
commitment of 2 hours per week is required (which is flexible and can be worked
around your other commitments). All volunteers will be supported by the Service
Manager and offered additional training, re-imbursement of expenses and
informal volunteer get-togethers.

This role
requires a DBS check and 2 character references
