Description

As a Volunteer Adviser, you’ll be at the heart of helping people overcome challenges and improve their lives. You’ll work directly with clients to understand their situation, provide accurate information and advice, and help them explore the options available to them.

No two days are the same. You may support someone who is struggling with debt, worried about their benefits, facing housing issues, or dealing with problems at work or with a consumer contract. Through comprehensive training and ongoing support, you’ll develop the knowledge and skills needed to make a real difference.

This rewarding role is ideal for people who enjoy helping others, are good listeners, and want to gain valuable experience while supporting their local community. Every conversation you have can help someone feel more informed, confident, and able to move forward.

As a Volunteer Adviser, you will:

  • Meet with clients face-to-face, over the phone, or online to understand the issues they need help with.
  • Listen carefully and ask questions to gather relevant information.
  • Research information and identify the advice, guidance or support available to clients.
  • Help clients understand their options and make informed decisions.
  • Provide accurate information on a range of issues, such as benefits, debt, housing, employment and consumer matters.
  • Support clients to complete forms, draft letters and access services where appropriate.
  • Keep clear and accurate records of client interactions using our case recording system.
  • Work closely with other volunteers and staff to ensure clients receive the best possible support.
  • Attend training, team meetings and ongoing learning opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills.
  • Follow Citizens Advice policies and procedures, including confidentiality, safeguarding and equality and diversity.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Friendly and approachable, with a genuine desire to help others.
  • Good listeners who can communicate clearly and sensitively with a wide range of people.
  • Patient and empathetic, particularly when supporting clients who may be facing difficult situations.
  • Motivated to learn, with a willingness to develop new knowledge and skills through training.
  • Organised and reliable, able to manage information accurately and follow procedures.
  • Open-minded and non-judgemental, treating everyone with dignity, respect and understanding.
  • Problem-solvers, who enjoy researching information and helping people find practical solutions.
  • Team players, able to work collaboratively with staff and fellow volunteers.
  • Comfortable using IT systems, or willing to learn how to use them.
  • Committed to making a positive difference in their local community.

No previous advice experience is required. We value enthusiasm, dedication and a willingness to learn just as much as existing knowledge.
